Can Gums Regrow Themselves?

information about gum disease in Winter Springs, FL

While browsing a website recently, an advertisement appeared for a product that can regrow your gums in two days. According to the marketing material, gums can be regrown within 48 hours. And although this would be incredible if it were true, the fact is, the body simply doesn't work that way. For instance, if you get a paper cut, the wound typically takes longer than 48 hours to heal. If a fingertip is severed, it will need to be reattached through surgical methods. So, how do gums magically regrow themselves in 48 hours?

The truth is, they don't. The gums cannot grow back once they recede. It would be wonderful if they could and did (especially within 48 hours). However, the good news is that some treatments are capable of reattaching and restoring gum tissue around the teeth.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a progressive condition that starts with gingivitis or inflammation of the gums. If you have gingivitis, your gums may bleed easily or are red and even swollen. These are all early signs of gum disease. If left untreated, gum disease can progress to periodontitis, which is when the supporting structures of the teeth are damaged. This damage can eventually lead to tooth loss.

Although gum disease is often painless in its early stages, it's important to be on the lookout for these early warning signs so you can treat the condition before it gets worse. If you notice any changes in your gums, be sure to see us right away.

Can My Gums Grow Back?

As anyone who has ever sustained damage from gum disease knows, gums can recede, causing teeth to become loose and eventually fall out. While there is no way to completely reverse the damage caused by gum disease, there are ways to prevent further recession of the gums, and surgery can help restore some of the tissue.
